Defense of Criminal Investigations and Proceedings
Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Issues
Many of our clients are chemically dependent upon alcohol or drugs, many suffer from mental health issues, and some clients have a dual diagnosis, with coexisting chemical dependency and mental health conditions. These clients may face criminal prosecution for conduct that is uncharacteristic for them and is directly related to chemical dependency, mental health, or medical conditions. At Rothschild Wishek + Sands LLP, we work with clients on both their legal cases and underlying issues, helping them access appropriate treatment when necessary.
A focus on treatment
Getting into treatment and dealing with these fundamental issues is critical to achieving a positive outcome in many criminal proceedings and to continued success on probation. In the legal system, judges and prosecutors often support clients getting treatment. They understand how these issues can lead to uncharacteristic bad choices and that successful treatment can keep someone from further encounters with the criminal justice system. Even if convicted of a crime, entering a treatment program may substantially lessen the length of a sentence, or even help clients avoid jail or prison entirely.
The prison system exists to segregate convicted offenders from the general public and serve societal needs for punishment and retribution. It is not set up to help people with drug or alcohol problems or mental health issues. The best result is to help people get the treatment they need and avoid incarceration when possible. Our attorneys work with a network of professionals to connect people with the proper sources for help. We assist clients in getting evaluated by the proper health care providers, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors, and further help them access appropriate treatment programs.
Our firm has a longstanding history of providing time and financial support to assist nonprofit organizations in their missions to help those who suffer from addiction, mental health issues, homelessness, and related problems.
